Aerobic vs Conventional Septic Systems on North Texas Clay

How both work, the 20-year math, and why the soil decides.

Quick answer: On North Texas Blackland clay, aerobic spray systems dominate because the clay will not percolate well enough for a conventional drain field. Conventional systems are cheaper to buy and own where soil allows them ($6,000 to $12,000 installed, minimal upkeep). Aerobic systems cost more up front ($10,000 to $18,000+), carry mandatory maintenance, but work where clay says conventional cannot. How the two systems work

Conventional (anaerobic): a buried tank settles solids, and liquid effluent flows to a drain field where soil finishes the treatment. No moving parts beyond gravity in the simplest designs. The soil is the treatment plant, which is why soil quality decides everything.

Aerobic (ATU): an aerator injects air so aerobic bacteria digest waste faster and more completely, a chlorinator disinfects, and a pump sprays the treated water over the lawn. The machine replaces the soil’s role, which is why it works on clay, and why it has parts that wear, alarms, and state-required maintenance.

Why Ellis County went aerobic

Houston Black and Austin clay soils move water at rates measured in hundredths of an inch per hour. A conventional drain field on that ground drowns: effluent goes down, cannot leave, and comes back up as the soggy, smelly stripe every rural neighbor recognizes. Texas site evaluation rules effectively rate that texture unsuitable for standard absorption fields, so nearly all new rural installs around Midlothian, Waxahachie, and the county at large are aerobic spray systems. Which is better, aerobic or conventional?

Can I convert my aerobic system to conventional to skip the maintenance?

Almost never on clay, the soil that forced aerobic in the first place has not changed. The maintenance obligation follows the system type.

Do aerobic systems smell?

A healthy one, no, aerobic digestion is far less odorous than anaerobic. Odor from an aerobic system means something failed: aerator, chlorination, or overloading. That is a service call.
