Every septic system does the same three jobs: separate solids from water, treat the water, and return it to the ground. The differences between systems are just different answers to job two and three.
Separation. Everything from your drains flows to a buried tank. Heavy solids sink and become sludge. Grease and light material float and become scum. The clarified liquid in the middle, effluent, moves on. This is pure physics, and it works exactly as long as the tank has room. When sludge and scum take up too much volume, water leaves the tank before it has settled, carrying solids to the most expensive part of your system. This single fact is behind most septic failures, and it is why pumping is the cheapest insurance in home ownership.
Treatment. Bacteria do the real work. In a conventional system, anaerobic bacteria (no oxygen) partially digest waste in the tank, and the soil finishes the job. In an aerobic system, an air pump feeds oxygen-loving bacteria that digest waste faster and more completely, then chlorine disinfects the result. Aerobic treatment exists because North Texas clay refuses to do the soil’s share, more on that below.
Dispersal. Conventional systems send effluent to a drain field: perforated pipes in gravel trenches where water seeps into the soil. Aerobic systems spray treated, disinfected water over your lawn through sprinkler heads, usually at night. Either way, the ground is the final destination, which is why the ground’s ability to accept water governs everything.
Fastest identification: walk your yard. Sprinkler heads that are not connected to an irrigation system, plus a green or gray control panel on the house or a post, plus two or three tank lids: aerobic. No panel, no sprinklers, maybe a vent pipe or two over a rectangular area of lawn: conventional.
Why the split exists here: most of Ellis County and the surrounding Blackland Prairie sits on Houston Black and Austin clay, soils that move water at hundredths of an inch per hour. A conventional drain field on that ground drowns. Texas site evaluation rules effectively rule it out, so nearly every system installed in the last two decades around Midlothian, Waxahachie, and Red Oak is aerobic. Conventional systems survive on older properties and on the sandier pockets, western Mansfield, some creek-bottom loams, parts of Venus and Maypearl. Texas regulates on-site sewage facilities (OSSF) under Health and Safety Code Chapter 366 and TCEQ rule 30 TAC 285. What that means for an owner, in plain terms:
Owned well, a septic system costs less than most people fear. Owned badly, it is one of the most expensive systems in the house. The difference is almost entirely maintenance timing.

Tanks: 30 to 40+ years for concrete, less for old steel. Drain fields: 20 to 30 years maintained, a fraction of that neglected. Aerobic components are wear items on shorter cycles (aerators 3-5 years). The system outlives the mortgage if the tank gets pumped.
No additive removes solids, and a healthy system needs no bacterial help, every flush restocks the bacteria. Save the money for the pump-out that additives cannot replace.
No structures over tanks or fields, access and soil function both matter, and setback rules apply to new construction near system components. Before you build, locate the system; before you buy plans, check the permit drawing on file with your county.
