Quick answer: Three things belong in a septic system: water, human waste, and toilet paper. Everything else, wipes of every kind, grease, coffee grounds, “flushable” anything, harsh chemicals, shortens the life of your tank or kills the bacteria doing the work. The rule that covers everything

A septic system is a living machine: bacteria digest what you send down, solids settle, and water moves on. Anything that does not break down fills the tank as permanent sludge. Anything toxic kills the bacteria. Anything greasy coats and clogs. Every item below fails one of those three tests.

Never flush (bathroom)

Chemicals: the bacteria killers

• Chemical drain cleaners (lye, sulfuric acid): one heavy use can sterilize a tank. Snake or plunge instead, or call it in.
• Bleach in volume: normal laundry amounts are fine; cleaning binges and “shocking” the toilet with a bottle are not.
• Antibacterial soaps and quaternary cleaners: the name says it, they kill bacteria. Use sparingly.
• Paint, solvents, motor oil, pesticides: never. These pass through to your yard and groundwater.
• Water softener backwash: debated; heavy brine discharge can disturb tank chemistry. If your softener discharges to septic, mention it at your next inspection.
• Pool chlorine tablets in aerobic chlorinators: dangerous and wrong. Wastewater-rated calcium hypochlorite only.
